We have just returned from a three day long trading expedition. We traded with three Indian tribes. The Indians had dark skin and the men had at least one feather in their hair. They wore clothes made of animal skins. They liked the beads better than the trinkets. At first they wanted to give us decorative feathers, but we insisted that they give us beaver furs. We came home with 38 beaver furs which is 1 1/9 of a barrel.
We had a lot of people but almost no house. We had 25 acres of food planted. We almost had enough beaver furs to pay off our debt but were short by one-tenth of a barrel. We didn't get a peace treaty with the Indians and are working toward it. We were also able to teach our children english customs.
We have been busy with our spring planting. Each day we work 12 hours or at least until dark. We do not take breaks for anything except for meals. We have been planting corn, barley, and beans. It is hard work and my whole body is sore. I have blisters on my hands. So far we have planted 25 acres of food and aim to get 5 more. While we were in the field we saw indians and everybody dove for cover. We did not get attacked though.
We decided we must make friends with the Indians. We planned to do this by negotiating a treaty with them. The Indians did not like our gifts and gave us nothing. Not one of us spoke their language so we used Squanto as a translator. We stayed with them for two days and were able to make enemies with them. We fear from an attack from the Indians and bury our dead at night.
During our voyage across the atlantic we ate pork, cheese, oatmeal, and a biscuit called hard tack . In the New World the Indians showed us other foods such as game, corn, and berries. We did not like these foods because of their lack of english customs. The lack of food caused a lot of starvation. So far eighteen colonists have died from starvation and disease. The saddest death was the death of Brandon King because he was a major person in forming our colony.
Our colony in the New World did not have a government. So we stayed on board and made a plan for who would govern our colony and how. We elected the parents as our colony leaders. They will be responsible for making the important decisions. We all agreed to follow the speed well compact. After we signed the agreement we went ashore and set up sentry duty because we were suspecting a attack from the indians/Mrs. Srnak.
Today we began building our settlements. First, we sent workers into the woods to get wood to build the walls. This is a very time consuming process so it put off building for a while. They cut the trees into six logs each. Our houses have thatch roofs. These aren,t very stable. Each house also has a fireplace to cook the food and keep us warm in the cold winter. We were able to build three houses. I think that we should have been able to build more houses. It will be a tough winter to survive.
Dear Journal
Crossing the great ocean was a adventure. At first the journey went smoothly and the weather was fair. We were able to get used to conditions at sea. The weather didn't change though. We were able to have a good rest of the voyage. At one point we were all scared for our lives when the main beam of the ship cracked. I was scared that our ship would crack apart. Life on the ship was unhealthy though because of lack of medicine, space, and privacy. |
