Its November 1621. We have been living here for a year and here is how we have been doing. Children have been raised learning English traditions we also finally have religious freedom. We also made a peace treaty with the native americans. We payed off our debt to England with two barrels of of beaver fur. We only built 11 houses but we plan on building more now thats its warmer. We harvested lots of food 27 acres. We still have 80 of our original survivors.
We have just returned home from a 3 day trading expedition. We traded with three different native american tribes. The native americans looked different from the people in Europe. They wore animal skin and braids with fathers in them. They liked the European items the best. It was a struggle to reason with them. At first they wanted to give us food such as fish and corn, but we insisted that we get beaver furs. We returned home to our colony with 48 beaver skins.
We have been busy with our spring planting. Each day we work 14 hours in the fields I am very tired. We have been planting corn, barley, peas, and wheat. Before the seeds are planted the ground is hard and it needs to be fertilized. It is hard work to fertilize it. My back and shoulders are sore and I have blisters all over my hands and feet. So far we have planted 27 acres and want to plant at least 3 more to make 30 acres. Squanto showed us how to plant corn. First we put the seeds in mounds 3 to 4 feet apart. Then we put fish to fertilize it.
We decided that we need to make friends with the local native americans. We planned to do this by trading gifts. The native americans liked our gifts and gave us help with our hunting and fishing skills. Not one of us could speak their language so we had squanto help us understand them. We stayed with them for two days and we were able to make a peace treaty.
During our voyage across the Atlantic we ate cheese, pickled pork, pickled beef, and hardtack. In the new world the Indians showed us other foods we could hunt and eat like duck, geese, and deer. We did not like these foods because we were used to food from England. The lack of food cause many deaths. So far 6 colonists died of starvation. The saddest death was when Mrs. Duffy died of lack of food.
Yesterday we began building our houses. First, we sent workers into the woods to chop trees. They brought back wood for our house. Then we we made wood planks from the trees. We used these planks to form the walls of our house. Our houses had yellow thatch roofs, and each house had a chimney so we could cook our meals and stay warm. We were able to build 5 houses.
Today I learned all about the Mayflower it has 6 sails and 55 lines. Life on the ship is horrible we get banged up against the side of the ship. My whole body aches from being under this condition. We get no privacy and we have to go to the bathroom in a bucket. We get the same food oatmeal, pork, peas, fish, beans, and cheese. I am so bored and a little frightened. I am very mad I can not go in the Great Cabin it is not fair!
Our colony in the new world did not have a government. So we stayed on board our ship and made a plan for governing our colony. We elected Evan Greene as our colony leader for the week. He will be responsible for settling arguments. We all agreed to the Pilgrim Compact. After we all signed the agreement we went ashore and set up sentries because we did not want to get attacked by the indians.
Dear diary,
Crossing the great ocean was quite an adventure. At first the weather was fair and sailing was looking great. Then it changed and the the seas became rough. At one point in our journey we feared for our lives when the ship started to crack. Life on the ship was hard because we were crammed in the boat tightly. Finally we reached land. |
