It is November 1621. We have lived in the new world for approximately 1 year. Our numbers are still big at 80. We will be able to survive the harsh winter from our27 acres of harvested food even after our 3 day feast. We had plenty of room in our 11 houses and we had time to build them, because we paid of our debt to England, so they could build more houses. We paid it with 1 of our 2 barrels of beaver fur. Even with all of those accomplishments our 3 best were getting a peace treaty, teaching our kids English customs, and getting religious freedom from England. Our one year so far was quiet good.
Today we returned from a 3 day trading expedition with 3 different tribes. The indians looked nice but quite different. They feathers in their hair and animal skin and fur for cloths. Out of anything we offered they liked the European items the best. It was a success. First they wanted to give us food, but we insisted they give us beaver furs. At the end of the 3 day exposition we got 48 beaver furs witch was worth enough to pay our debt to England.
We have been busy with our spring planting. Everyday we spend 14 hours each day out in the field. We have planted barley, peas, corn, and wheat. Before the seeds are in the ground the ground is hard and dry so, we fertilize it with fish. It is painful work. Our back, shoulders, feet, and legs are sore and our feet and hands have blisters. At this point we have planted 27 acres of food and we want to plant 3 more. While working in the field, Squanto directed us on how to grow corn. First we dig out mounds and put 3 seeds in them. We then cover the hole at the top and start again 3 feet away constantly bending over.
Yesterday we decided to make friends with the indians near our settlement. We planned to make friends by exchanging gifts. The indians enjoyed our gifts and in exchange they gave us lessons on catching fish and hunting. None of could speak their language so we had to translate through Squanto who learned how to speak English from fishermen in Main. We stayed with them for 2 days and were ably to finish the peace treaty.
As we crossed the Atlantic some of the foods we ate were cheese, pickled beef, pork, and a biskit called hardtack. Once we arrived at the new world the Indians showed us other food such as duck, geese, turkey, and deer. We did not eat these foods because we were so accustomed to English foods. The lack of food caused many deaths. So far 6 people are dead because of starvation. The saddest death of starvation was Corrine.
Yesterday we started to build our houses. First, we sent workers into the woods to chop down trees. They brought back some oak wood and then turned them into wooden planks. We used the planks to form the walls for our house. For the roof we had yellow thatch and added a two foot tall chimney. We used the chimney to cook meals and stay nice and warm. We were able to build 5 houses by the end of the day.
Today our 6 sails started to draw us off course but, we got back on course with our 55 lines. Today for breakfast we had oat meal. The wind was knocking us into the walls of this vessel. For lunch we had rice, meat, and cheese. Captain Wilson used the whipstaff to keep us on corse. For dinner we had peas, pork, and beans.
In the new world we did not have a government so, we stayed on our ship and made a plan for governing our colony. I was elected first term. I will now be responsible for giving jobs and settling arguments. We all agreed to the pilgrim compact. After we signed the agreement we went ashore and set up sentries because we didn't want the Indians to attack us. during this one day 4 of us were killed.
Dear Diary,
It was fall 1620. Crossing the ocean was a terrifying adventure. At first the weather was fair but, then it changed and the seas became rough. At a time we feared for are lives when the ship developed a crack but, thankfully we mended the crack. Life on the ship was tough because we were crammed on a small boat about 4 foot by 6 foot. At one time one of are fellow pilgrims fell off but, we saved him. |
