Dear journal,
We have seventy-eight original colonists left, 26 acres of food, 8 houses, and 1 barrel of beaver fur. We don't have peace with the Indians but were working on it. We have religious freedom and we were able to raise children with English traditions. It's been a year in the new world and we really like it. It's better here, so we are going to stay. Dear journal,
We have just returned from a long day of trading expedition. We traded with three different Indian tribes. The Indians looked like they had a feather in the back of there heads, and braids. They wore animal skins. They liked the beads and trinkets the best. It was going well. At first they wanted to give us food, but we insisted that we get beaver fur. We returned home with a barrel of beaver fur. We had food and we were pleased with our lives. Dear journal,
We have been busy with our spring planting. Each day we work 14 hours in the fields. We have been planting corn, beens, and barley. Before the seeds are planted the ground is fertilized. It is hard work. My back, arms, and hands are sore and my hands are covered with blisters. So far we have planted 26 acres and we want to plant corn more. While we were working in the fields, we saw that our fertilize worked but our beens were not growing. We were worried about this but we knew we were going to be ok. Dear journal,
We decided we must make friends with the local Indians. We planned to do this by signing a peace treaty but we did not get the peace treaty. The Indians liked our gifts and gave us fishing lessons. Not one of us could speak there language so we talked to them by sign language. We stayed with them for two days and we were able to get along with them. Dear journal,
During the voyage across the Atlantic we ate pork and cheese. In the New World the Indians showed us other foods such as deer, and fish. We did not like these foods because we didn't know what they were. The lack of food caused us to starve. So far four-teen of our colonists died. The saddest death was when Addie died because she was a good friend. Today we began building our houses. First, we sent workers into the woods to chop down trees. They got a lot of logs. Then we made cabins from the trees. We used these logs to form the walls of our cabin. Our houses had thatch roofs, and each house had a fireplace so we could cook our meals and stay warm. We were able to build five houses. It was hard to build the houses but now we have a place to live.
Dear journal,
Our colony in the New World did not not have a government. So we stayed on board our ship and made a plan for our governing our colony. We elected Benjamin as our colony leader. He will be responsible for keeping us safe. We all agreed to follow his rules. After we signed the agreement we went ashore and set up sentries because we need to be safe and because we need to be prepared. Dear journal, Fall 1620
Crossing the Great Ocean was a great adventure. At first I was surprised at how nice the weather was. But then it got rough and bumpy with big storms and waves. At one point we feared our lives when the ship cracked and a man fell overboard. Life on the ship was tight because we had no room. This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I was on board with 30 men and it was very cramed. We were so excited when we first sighted land on November 9, 1620. A violent sorm broke out but thankfully everybody lived. Finally on November 11, 1620 we arived in the new world. |
