Dear Diary,
We have 38 survivors, but we were unfortunate becauuse we only built 2 houses. We made a peace treaty with the Indians and we have religious freedom. We couldn't fully pay off our debt so they killed 6 of our colonists. We have 15 acres of food harvested and we can raise our children with English traditions. We have survived 1 tough year in the new world and probably have many more to go. Dear Diary,
We have just returned from a 3 day trading expedition. We traded with three different Indian tribes. The Indians looked like they wanted new things from us. They wore animal skin and feathers. They liked our beads and trinkets the best. It was interesting trading with them. At first they wanted to give us food and wood, but we insisted we get beaver skin. We returned home to our colony with 21 skins. Dear Diary,
We decided we must make friends with the local Indians. We planned to do this by creating a treaty with them. The Indians liked our gifts and gave us food. Not one of us could speak their language so we talked with them using pantomiming. We stayed with them for two days and we were able to catch fish, hunt, and plant crops. Dear Diary,
During our voyage across the Atlantic we ate pickled beef, pork, and biscuits. In the new world the Indians showed us other kinds of foods we could eat such as deer, corn, birds, and fish. We did not like these foods because they were different than the ones in England because there was better food there. The lack of food caused us hunger. So far 52 colonists died. The saddest deaf was when Mitch died because he was the first. Dear Diary,
Today we began building our houses. First we sent workers into the woods to cut down trees that will make the logs. Then we made logs from the trees. We used these logs to form the walls of our cottage. Our houses had thatch roofs, and each house had a fireplace so we could cook meals and stay warm. We were able to build 2 houses. Dear Diary,
Today I, Pilgrim Charlotte learned more about my surroundings on the Mayflower. I learned more about what parts of the ship were called, my parents taught me and I thought it was very interesting. I can't wait to arrive in the new world. I really can't wait to stop going to the bathroom in a chamber pot. We have no privacy at all. We had to wear the same clothes everyday for 65 days straight. Near the new world we are planning to stop and get fresh water and new supplies so we can build new houses. Dear Diary,
Our colony in the new world did not have a government. So we stayed on board our ship and made a plan for governing our colony. We elected Charlotte and Antonio as our colony leaders. They will be responsible for declaring the votes and making them official. We all agreed to help each other when needed. After we signed the agreement we went ashore and set up sentries because we don't want the indians to attack and lose more people. Dear Diary,
Crossing the great ocean was an adventure. At first the weather was fare then it changed and seas became rough. At one point we feared for our lives when the ship's beam cracked. Life on the ship was unsteady because we lost one mans life. The man we lost is named Mitch. Mitch had fallen off board because it was so crammed. We had 102 people on board and 20 sailors. |
All about Charlotte!
