How are Greek Myths similar to stories in other cultures?

Dear Diary,
It is September 1621, we have left England over a year ago. We only have 38 colonists surviving and only 15 acres of food. We have 2 houses, and one barrel of fur to pay our debt. But, on the bright side we have a peace treaty with the Indians and we have religious freedom. We also raised our children with English traditions. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
We have just returned from a three day trading expedition. We traded with three different Indian tribes. The Indians looked very unusual. They wore animal skins. They liked hunting the best. It was very fun seeing them. At first they wanted to give us food and wood, but we insisted that we get beaver furs. We returned home to our colony with one barrel of beaver fur. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
We have been busy with our spring planting. Each day we work 5 hours in the fields. We have been planting corn, wheat, barely, and peas. Before the seeds are planted the ground is hoed and dug. It is hard work. My hands, feet, and back are sore and my hands are covered in blisters. So far we have planted 15 acres and want to plant 10 more. While we were working in the fields, some people went fishing and got 10,000 fish and we used them for fertilizer every day. Also 1/15 of our crop died. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
We decided we must make friends with the local Indians. We planned to do this by giving them gifts from Europe. The Indians liked our gifts and gave us food and water. Not one of us could speak their language, so we talked to them by telling and English speaking Indian named Squanto what to say to the Indians. We stayed with them for two days and we were able to catch fish and plant corn. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
During out voyage across the Atlantic we ate mutton, beef, peas, bread, oatmeal, and hardtack. In the New World the Indians showed us other food we could eat such as duck, turkey, deer, and corn. We did not like these foods because they were unusual. The lack of food caused our colonists to die. So far 52 of our colonists died. The saddest death was when Mitch died when he fell overboard. I miss him so much. Why did he have to die? Why? Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
Today we began building our houses. First, we sent workers into the woods to cut down trees. They brought the trees into the area were we were settling. Then we made logs from the trees. We used these logs to form the walls of our houses. Our houses had yellow thatch roofs, and each house had a fireplace so we could cook our meals and stay warm. We were able to build two houses. We lost 23 people from the cold, one of those people was Dorothy. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
I am sick of this place! I can't believe I have to stay on this boat! I don't have any privacy or elbow room or any type of room! Right now I am in the storage room, it is the only place with room for me. My friend Dorothy is emptying the chamber pot, I feel bad for her, having to clean peoples' yucky stuff. Some of the kids are sneaking in here and trying to take the food. I am just thinking about Mitch, he got hit on the head during the trip because of the boat rocking back and forth, then a week later he fell off the boat and... and... died. I wish I was a chief officer so I could eat better and get more fresh air. The fresh air would be great! Sometimes writing in this diary is boring. Once we are in the New World I will adventure around it, but if there are natives I will not be afraid of them. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
Our colony in the New World did not have a government. So we stayed on board our ship and made a plan for governing our colony. We elected Antonio Abbott as our colony leader. He will be responsible for doing stuff leaders do. We all agreed to sign a compact. After we signed the compact we went ashore and set up sentries because Indians were stealing from us. Tony was attacked and killed while Ella, Ruby, Justin, JJ, TJ, Nicholas, and Phyllis died building our houses. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott Dear Diary,
Crossing the great ocean was an adventure. At first the weather was nice then it changed and the seas became rough. At one point we feared for our lives when the ship's main pole cracked. Life on the ship was crowded because there was a lot of people. I was so happy I managed to survive the harsh waters. But, sadly Mitch died, he tripped of the boat and fell into the waves, we couldn't save him at all, I wish he never fell off. Sincerely, Madeline Abbott |
