It's been a year. So far we have seventy eight survivors out of the original one hundred three. We planted twenty six acres of food. But we only made eight houses so it was snug. We were one barrel short of paying of our debt with beaver fur. We have religious freedom and raise our children with English traditions. But we weren't able to make a peace treaty with the Indians.
Spring 1621. Dear journal: We have just returned from a long day trading expedition. We traded with three different Indian tribes. The Indians looked alike cause men and women had braids but the men had one single feather. They wore animal skins. They liked the beans and trinkets the best. It was going well. At first they wanted to give us food, but we insisted that we get beaver fur. We returned home to our colony with a barrel of beaver fur.
Spring 1621 Dear journal: We have been busy with our spring planting. Each day we work fourteen hours in the fields. We have been planting corn, beans, barley, and peas. Before the seeds are planted the ground is fertilized. It is hard work. My back and legs are sore and my hands and feet are covered with blisters. So far we have planted twenty six acres and want to plant four more. While we were working in the fields, we saw the beans barely, and peas weren't growing. But our corn was growing really well when we used the fish we caught as fertilizer.
Spring 1620 Dear journal: We decided we must make friends with the local Indians. We planned to do this by making a peace treaty. The Indians liked our gifts and gave us fishing lessons and taught us how to plant crops. Not one of us could speak their language so we talked to them by talking in silent language. We stayed with them for two days and we weren't able to make a peace treaty.
Winter 1620: Dear journal During our voyage across the Atlantic we ate pork, cheese, hardtack, and pickeld beet. In the New World Indians showed us foods we could eat such as deere, duck, and fish. We did not like these foods because we were not familiar with them. The lack of food caused us to starv. So far fourteen of our colonists died. The saddest death was when Jeffery died because he was a good man.
Winter 1620: Today we began building our houses. First we sent workers into the woods to chop down trees. They got a lot of logs from the woods. Then we made a cabin from the logs. We used these logs to form the walls of our cabin. Our houses had yellow thatch roofs, and each house had a fireplace so we could cook our meals and stay warm. We were able to build five houses.
November 6th 1620
Dear Journal :Our colony in the new world did not have a government. So we stayed on board our ship and made a plan for governing our colony. We elected Benjamin Smith as our colony leader. He will be responsible for making sure everyone follows the rules. We all agreed to the compact. After we signed the agreement we went ashore and set up sentries to protect our tools from the indians. Fall 1620, Dear journal Crossing the great ocean was an adventure. At first the weather was clear then it changed and the seas became rough in the fall and the wind steered us of course. At one point we feared our lives when the ship cracked. In between September 16 and November 11 a women named Elizabeth Hopkins had a baby and named it Oceanus. We stopped at Newfoundland. Life on the ship was not fun because it was very cramped and we lost two passengers but we rescued one of them.
